What is on a card
Reading the picture instead of memorising the meaning.
Tarot cards are illustrated, which is what makes them readable. Even if you forget the meaning you can build a reasonable reading from the picture, which is what practised readers mostly do anyway.

- number / symbol
Where to look
- What is the FIGURE doing? Standing, fleeing, turned away?
- DIRECTION: right tends to be future, left the past. Where is the figure looking?
- BACKGROUND: clear sky or storm? Empty desert or full field?
- NUMBER: how many objects? The number story is read from here.
An exercise: pull a card and write three sentences WITHOUT looking up the meaning. Then read it. You will usually have got at least one right.
