The words, without new jargon.
Each term gets one plain line first. If you want the longer version it is right underneath.
Aett
-
One of the three families of eight runes in the Elder Futhark.
Freyr's aett is about making a life, Heimdall's about the hard season, Tyr's about people and home. Plural: aettir.
Lesson: Runes: twenty-four letters, three families Big Three
-
Sun, Moon and rising. Where you start reading any chart.
Lesson: The Big Three Birth chart
-
A diagram of the sky from your birthplace at the moment you were born. Astronomical data.
Lesson: What a birth chart is Conjunction
-
Two planets sitting together on the wheel. Their effects blend.
Ecliptic
-
The path the Sun traces across the sky over a year. The zodiac is that path in 12 equal slices.
Lesson: What the zodiac actually is Elder Futhark
-
The oldest runic alphabet: twenty-four straight-line letters, roughly 2nd–8th century.
Named after its first six letters (F, U, Th, A, R, K). Each rune is a sound and a word, and the word is where the reading starts.
Lesson: Runes: twenty-four letters, three families Element
-
Fire, earth, air, water. Tells you what a sign is made of.
Lesson: The four elements Ephemeris
-
A day-by-day table of planetary positions. The sky data in this app comes from one.
House
-
The twelve segments of a chart. Tells you which area of life a planet shows up in.
Planet is what, sign is how, house is where. Houses are drawn from birthplace and time; without a birth time they cannot be calculated.
Lesson: What a birth chart is Lunar new year
-
The day the Eastern zodiac year changes — between 21 January and 20 February, never 1 January.
January and early-February births usually belong to the previous animal. Celestine keeps a table of dates from 1924 to 2043.
Lesson: Eastern zodiac: the year, not the month Major Arcana
-
The 22 main cards of a tarot deck. Big themes and turning points.
Minor Arcana
-
The 56 cards split into four suits. The texture of daily life.
Modality
-
Cardinal, fixed, mutable. Tells you how a sign behaves.
Lesson: The three modalities Moon phase
-
The cycle of appearance created by the Moon's position relative to the Sun. New to full is 29.5 days.
Number sign
-
A repeated number — 111, 11:11, 444 — read as a prompt to notice what you were thinking.
A modern practice (1990s onward), not an ancient one. Useful as an attention habit; not a message from outside.
Lesson: Number signs: a habit, not an oracle Opposition
-
Two planets at opposite ends of the wheel. It describes a choice or a pull.
Orb
-
How many degrees off an aspect can be and still count. Not exactly 90? Still valid if within orb.
Retrograde
-
When a planet appears to move backwards. It does not actually reverse — it is a perspective effect.
As Earth overtakes a slower planet, that planet briefly appears to move backwards. In astrology it is read as a period of review.
Reversed card
-
A card that lands upside down. It does not reverse the meaning; it turns it inward or makes it harder.
Reversed rune
-
A stone that lands glyph-down: the same energy blocked, delayed or turned inward.
Nine symmetrical runes cannot reverse — Gebo, Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Sowilo, Ingwaz, Dagaz.
Lesson: Runes: twenty-four letters, three families Rising sign
-
The sign on the eastern horizon when you were born. The surface where you meet the world.
It changes roughly every two hours, which is why the birth time is needed. It sets the first house and therefore the whole house layout — the single most information-heavy point in a chart.
Lesson: The rising sign Secret friend
-
Each Eastern animal's one hidden ally — a pairing that does not look alike but works.
Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey, Horse–Goat.
Lesson: Eastern zodiac: the year, not the month Square
-
A 90-degree angle. It creates friction — which is usually where growth comes from.
Suit
-
Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles. Each maps to an element.
Tasseography
-
Reading tea leaves: the shapes left in the cup, placed on the map of rim, bottom and handle.
Lesson: Tea leaves: where the handle points Transit
-
Where the planets are TODAY. Your birth chart is fixed; transits are the moving part.
Trine
-
A 120-degree angle. An easy connection that does not ask for effort.
Trine (Eastern)
-
One of four groups of three animals in the Eastern zodiac that share a temperament.
Rat–Dragon–Monkey, Ox–Snake–Rooster, Tiger–Horse–Dog, Rabbit–Goat–Pig. Same trine reads as natural allies. Not the astrological aspect of the same name.
